San Lorenzo Zinacantan a Tzotzil Mayan municipality encompassing several villages, is located in the southern highlands of the state of Chiapas. These beautiful fabrics are created by a dynamic cooperative of women lead by a young, talented artisan. The cotton yarns are local and are meticulously prepared.

Each piece is woven on a back strap loom; one end is attached across the kneeling artisans’ waist and the other end is attached to a tree. This allows enough tension for the patterns to take form as the artisan proudly counts threads, creating her designs purely from memory.
